How long does it take to get over a breakup?

I was in a three-and-a-half year live-in relationship with my ex-girlfriend; the breakup was mutual. We remained on good terms after I moved interstate. I have been completely destroyed since the breakup and I have no idea when I’ll start feeling okay again. It’s been eight months and I still cry every day. I walk, play squash, practise tai chi, see a psychologist, don’t drink or do drugs. She has a new boyfriend now and I recently decided to sever contact as it’s too painful.

Benjamin, thank you for being so sensitive and deep about this subject.
Before I read your question I assumed that men never felt that kind of pain because they do not love as deeply as women can.
You have reminded me that men are human too.
I was in a 20 year marriage, ex was abusive and divorce was a nightmare.
I got away from him 3 years ago and am still a basket case. I also hated men until I read your question.
You need to know this, there are wonderful women out there that, when given the chance, will be kind and loving to you so take your time healing and when you are ready you will make a special woman very happy indeed!
If I can see how wonderful you are in this way just think how a great woman in your future will feel about you.
Thank you so much.
only when you stop tai chi and drink a beer
It takes as long as you need it to. My husband went six years after his previous marriage broke up. No dates, no nothing. Take your time and get to know and love yourself first. Take yourself out on a date. Learn how to be alone and figure YOU out. Being alone is not a bad thing.
I hear you man. I broke up with my ex over 3 years ago and still miss her on occasion. My best advise is to make yourself busy with something you enjoy. There’s no easy cure other than time though, so prepare to feel it for a while.
I know exactly what you’re going through man. I’m feeling your pain. The best thing you can do is move on. Hang out with your friends a lot more, volunteer, concentrate on work/school, and just get your mind off of her. The more you think about her, the more you’ll miss her and it will kill you inside. Trust me. I went through something similar, and I’m about to go through it again. Try to not talk to her for a while (until you get over it) because it will help you get over her.
Also, don’t date any other girl unless you’re ready. You might think that it’ll help you get over her, but being on a date might make you think of her and miss her more. Time heals my friend. Once you’re healed, go out and find someone else. Good luck to you
well she has proved herself to be a stronger person and she has moved on …i guess u shud also take a move on…u can’t afford to stagnate ur life just for 1 girl….and as you said the breakup was mutual so there is nothing wrong in getting into another relationship….severing all ties with her is also an option as i guess u r too much into her and can’t think out so yeah its a good option to edit her from your life and thrust yourself out of this situation
as long as you need
